Medal of Honor Program
Medal of Honor Character Development Program
At High Desert School, we believe that developing strong character is just as important as achieving academic success. As part of our commitment to educating the whole child, we proudly implement the Medal of Honor Character Development Program, a nationally recognized character education program developed by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society.
The program is built around six core values that are embodied by Medal of Honor Recipients and serve as a guide for students as they learn, lead, and grow:
- Courage
- Commitment
- Integrity
- Sacrifice
- Citizenship
- Patriotism
Through inspiring stories of both military and civilian heroes, students learn that these values are not reserved for extraordinary individuals—they can be demonstrated through everyday actions and decisions. The program encourages students to become positive leaders, responsible citizens, and compassionate members of their community.
How We Use the Program at High Desert School
MOH Mondays
Each Monday during AVID Advisory, students participate in MOH Mondays, where they engage in character development lessons and discussions centered around one of the six Medal of Honor values. Through reflection, collaboration, and real-world examples, students learn how these values apply to their own lives and school experiences.
Medal of Honor Mentor Days
One of our most meaningful traditions is our Medal of Honor Mentor Days. During these events, our 8th-grade students serve as mentors to younger Hawks, leading activities and discussions focused on character development. These opportunities allow older students to practice leadership while helping younger students build confidence, relationships, and a deeper understanding of the Medal of Honor values.
Medal of Honor Character Awards
Throughout the year, students who exemplify the values of Courage, Commitment, Integrity, Sacrifice, Citizenship, and Patriotism are recognized through our Medal of Honor Character Awards. These awards celebrate students who consistently demonstrate outstanding character and serve as positive role models within our school community.
Building Leaders of Character
The Medal of Honor Character Development Program aligns with High Desert School's mission to develop students who are academically prepared, socially responsible, and ready to make a positive impact on the world around them. By integrating character education into our school culture, we help students understand that leadership is not about titles or recognition—it is about making choices that reflect strong values and a commitment to serving others.
At High Desert School, character matters. Through the Medal of Honor Program, we challenge every Hawk to lead with courage, act with integrity, demonstrate commitment, embrace citizenship, practice sacrifice, and show pride in their community and country.
Together, we are building future leaders—one lesson, one action, and one student at a time.
